The question in this discussion
If you were playing a match with a friend today, would you launch LoL or Eternal Return?
Both League of Legends and Eternal Return let you queue alone and join a team with other players. The difference is not whether you need to assemble a team beforehand, but what you are trying to achieve in the match and how you build your equipment. League is a five-versus-five contest to attack the opposing base; Eternal Return is a contest to survive among multiple teams of three.

Other criteria for these people →What we’re comparing
This article compares Summoner’s Rift in League of Legends on PC with Normal and Ranked matches on Lumia Island in Eternal Return. ARAM and Cobalt Protocol follow different match formats and are outside this comparison.
Matchmaking and team composition
On League’s Summoner’s Rift, five players form a team against five opponents. You can enter the queue alone and be placed with other players, so you do not need to gather five people beforehand. Players divide their responsibilities between the top, middle and bottom lanes and the jungle. Teammates do not all gather in one place to fight from the start: they develop their champions in their assigned positions and join up where needed.
According to Eternal Return’s official mode guide, Normal and Ranked matches on Lumia Island have 24 players in teams of three. A three-person team does not mean that each player must bring two friends. The official Ranked guide explicitly describes a solo player being matched with a party of two. Starting the game alone and forming a team with other people is possible in both games.
In League, dividing the lanes and jungle lets the team develop while managing the routes into the opposing base. In Eternal Return, multiple enemy teams remain on the same island, so players need to watch not only the positions of all three members of their team but also routes where they may encounter other teams. Both games allow solo entry into matchmaking, but their match structures lead to different movements to coordinate with teammates.
What comes after winning a fight
League’s ultimate objective is to destroy the enemy Nexus, the central structure in its base. Scoring many champion kills is not itself the victory condition. Driving opponents away in a fight can create an opportunity to attack a turret or secure a neutral objective such as a dragon. Removing turrets opens the route into the base, while the effects granted by dragons and Baron help with later fights and attacks. An important part of the game is turning the advantage from kills into progress against structures and objectives.
In Eternal Return, defeating one team still leaves other teams in the match. If another team approaches just after yours finishes a fight, that recent victory alone does not guarantee an advantage in the next encounter. You need to check your remaining health and your teammates’ positions, then decide whether to fight again or move. That difference comes from having several teams compete at once. The match objective is to survive to the end, rather than destroy an opposing base.
A fight in League is part of the effort to attack the same opposing team’s base. A fight in Eternal Return is part of staying alive in a match where other teams remain. Eternal Return’s official Ranked guide also says that eliminations and downs contribute to points alongside final placement. Describing Eternal Return as only avoiding fights, or League as only competing for kills, misses the objectives of both games.
How you build your equipment
In League, you earn gold during a match and spend it on items in the shop. Progress comes both from gaining experience to increase levels and skills, and from buying equipment with gold. Even when playing the same champion, you must decide what to buy with the gold you currently have; skill in combat does not settle those item choices for you. Choosing which abilities to strengthen through items, and securing the gold to do so, are part of managing the match.
In Eternal Return, finding materials on the island and crafting equipment are part of the basic match structure. Completing equipment involves travelling through places with the materials you need, directly linking your route to your progress. This does not mean you must pick up every material yourself. Official help also explains how to buy materials with Credits. Dividing the games into ‘League allows purchases; Eternal Return only allows crafting’ would therefore be wrong. Eternal Return combines gathering and crafting with material purchases.
Both games involve building equipment while competing, but the paths to that equipment differ. In League, you earn gold and turn it into shop purchases. In Eternal Return, your route is tied to gathering materials and crafting, with purchases supplementing that process. Being comfortable controlling League champions does not mean you already know Eternal Return’s materials and crafting routes. Likewise, having played Eternal Return does not mean you have already learned League’s lane development and shop choices.

What the games share, and where they differ
Both let you queue alone, fight alongside teammates and build your equipment during a match. League is a contest against one fixed opposing team, where managing lanes and objectives leads toward destroying its Nexus. Eternal Return is a contest to gather materials, craft equipment and survive among multiple teams. Those structures change what you aim to secure after a fight and how you move to complete your equipment.
Facts we checked
Eternal Return’s player counts and modes are based on official help updated on July 30, 2025; the explanation of Credits uses help updated on February 12, 2025. The Ranked guide dated August 19, 2026 confirms solo matchmaking and the contribution of placement, eliminations and downs. For League, this article uses the official game guide together with the January 7, 2026 patch notes. These explain the basic match structure, not a comparison of character strength, item prices or matchmaking times in the current patch.

What changed
- · We corrected wording that made a personal experience of gathering friends sound like an entry requirement. We now explicitly state that both LoL and Eternal Return allow solo matchmaking, and define the comparison as Summoner's Rift versus normal and ranked matches on Lumia Island.
